Icarus Dark Ride Design

Design Team

As a Ride Design Team Captain within Gator Theme Park Engineering and Design, I led a team to create and design a dark ride themed around the Greek tale of Icarus.

I worked with the creative team to form the story of the ride. This included adding in a space twist to the ride where Icarus was stranded on a planet and had to fix his spaceship (his metaphorical wings) to flee from the planet and return home. The ride begins finding Icarus stranded on this trash filled planet. With him is his robot friend who acts as the father figure of the story, helping Icarus fix his spaceship. Once the pair return to space, Icarus must choose to take a safe and long route home or a fast and dangerous route home that passes by a wormhole. He chooses the latter and, true to the source material, flies too close to the wormhole which strands him once again on the trash planet.

Also as a team captain, I worked with the technical team to design a model ride vehicle for the attraction. I directed a team of 15 to design a trackless ride vehicle to accommodate a wide range of motion and maneuverability with ASTM F2291 standards in mind. The initial design of the ride vehicle used 4 omni-wheels to obtain 3 degrees of freedom. Later in the design process, I determined that a 3 wheel base would provide a similar range of motion and would better fit in our budget, decreasing the cost of the vehicle model by 13%.
